More than just cycling

Cycling Club marks 110th anniversary

In 1907 when the Goulburn Amateur Bicycle Club held its first recorded meeting both recreational riding and racing were already popular in the city through the support of a precursory organisation, a local branch of the League of Wheelmen (formed in 1893).

Showcasing the city’s support for the sport, in January of 1907, an adhoc local racing carnival, arranged at short notice, drew 600 paying spectators with gate takings of 27 pounds.  Also by this time the famous Goulburn to Sydney Classic road race was in its 6th year and had already been won by a local, Oliver H. Brooks, in 1903.

Down through the years Goulburn has continued to produced numerous cycling champions, most notably the 1932 one kilometre Olympic time trial champion Dunc Gray. The city has also hosted an array of race and recreational events across the district.
